CTC mountain bike maintenance courses
There are three cycle maintenance courses provided by CTC. Each are one days duration and cover the essential principles at each level. Levels 1 and 2 are provided as open courses (see the calendar pages) with all three courses available as special courses for groups at your venue.
With the scheme designed to be progressive from Level 1 to 3, The first two levels often operate on consecutive days, ensuring that you cover all aspects of fundamental maintenance principles. It is sometimes possible to miss a level where evidence of substantial maintenance experience already exists. All courses help you work on your own bike, with your own tools, with additional equipment available where needed.
Level 1 - Trailside repairs
Covering ride based repairs and pre-ride checks every rider should know, using essential trail tools:
- Personal safety, tool and chemical handling
- Tools, lubricants and aids
- Degrease, clean and lubricate
- Pre-ride equipment check
- Righty tighty and how tight is tight? - the torque wrench
- Brakes - cable adjustment, disc pad and v-brake block adjustment and replacement
- Gears - indexing, cable adjustment, limit adjustment
- Transmission - chain repair and replacement
- Headset - aheadset adjustment
- Wheels - punctures, tyre repair
- Emergency repairs - what to do when....
Level 2 - Advanced maintenance
When specific tools are needed, this course kicks in. Covering aspects of bike maintenance using standard cycle specific tools, this course includes aspects of home and essential commercial maintenance meaning that you can identify wear, replace standard parts and make adjustments to keep your bike running well. This course includes:
- Personal safety, tool and chemical handling
- Degrease, clean and lubricate
- Brakes - caliper adjustment, hydraulic brake bleeding
- Gears - Cable replacement, lubrication, mech removal, replacement and positioning
- Tranmission - Chainset, pedal, chainring and bottom bracket removal and replacement
- Tranmission - Cassette and freehub removal and replacement
- Headset - aheadset strip, lube and refit
- Wheels - trailside wheel truing; disc removal and replacement
- Lubrication - all items stripped and replaced through the course
- Wear and tear - managing your bike and extending component life
This course does not cover suspension maintenance, headset fitting or frame / thread facing
Level 3 - Fleet management
Where you are managing equipment provision, this course covers the protocols and processes to ensure that your bikes remain safe and you are able to fulfil and exceed statutory requirements. As this course is provided at your venue, your existing systems are considered and reviewed in the light of current requirements, with consultative direction provided by the tutor. This course looks at all equipment associated with fleet managment - bikes, helmets and other equipment.
Ideal for hire centres, activity providers and loan agents, this course covers:
- Why are protocols required? - legislation and you
- Awards and approvals - external competency mechanisms
- Essential principles of operation for equipment provision
- Equipment checks - on leaving, on returning and in depth
- Maintaining records and the audit trail
- Quarrantining and separation of unserviceable equipment
- Comparision of existing provision - what might need to change and how
