CTC Activity Provider Approval Scheme

Learning Outside the Classroom and Adventuremark

learning, but not in the classroom

CTC approve cycle, mountain bike and multi-activity providers with the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) and Adventuremark (AM) badges.

These approvals are UK wide and enable activity providers to instil confidence about their competencies, procedures and quality of service with their customers, whether it's in a Bikeability on the school playing fields context or undertaking the mountainous C2C (Coast to Coast) over 8 days.

Learning Outside the Classroom badge LOtC badging is a requirement of many schools and Local Education Authorities for selection of activity providers, whether these are museum visits or outdoor activity residentials. Designed to ensure that school pupils and young people gain appropriate and needs led learning opportunities that are integrated to their other learning environments, LOtC helps apply, contextualise and put into practice real personal development. It does what is says on the tin and embeds learning in non conventional environments.

Adventuremark, seperate or within LOtC Adventuremark is a verification of the safety requirement of all activity providers as part of effective and safe application of the outdoors through mechanisms that might range from archery to zipwires, including cycling and mountain biking.

Adventuremark provides a mechanism to define safe principles, protocols and procedures primarily for activities that fall outside of the Adventure Activities Licencing requirements (includes all road based cycling, and offroad cycling below 600m and less than 2.5km from emergency contact and/or road). Adventuremark is a stand alone verification for adults, or forms part of LOtC when providing for young people.

LOtC inspections include verification of Adventuremark unless a relevant Adventure Activities Licence is held
